SWALE

A shallow depression, in a flat area of land, that may be artificial or natural and used in a storm water drainage system.  Although the surrounding area is flat, both the side and the bottom of the swale are on an incline (slope), so as to drain water.  Basically, a swale is a depression in the ground that will carry water where we want it to go, using gravity.

EXAMPLE:

The swale will drain the rainwater away from the street.
