SEWER

An underground pipe or passage that carries sewage and sometimes surface water (as from rainfall).  Typically, however, it just carries sewage and it’s on a separate system from drains that drain to the ocean.  The reason for this is that sewage goes to a treatment plant, whereas drains carry directly to the ocean.  If sewers were to carry rainfall water, they would overload the sewage treatment facilities.  In our work, we do not work with sewers, but just with drains.
