RESTRAINT

  1. Whatever keeps the stones at the edge of a paving stone surface in place.
  2. A created or manufactured product to keep the edge stones in place when a paved stone surface is constructed.
  3. Anything that holds the pavers from moving horizontally (side to side).

EXAMPLE:

On the side of the garage, the restraint for the paving stones is the garage floor.  On the other sides, the restraints had to be built by setting paving stones in concrete.
