PLAN VIEW or PLAN

  1. When architects design buildings, they have to do two-dimensional drawings to show what the building will look like from each side and from the top. The view from the top is called a plan. The views from the front and sides are called elevations.  Also see ELEVATION VIEW.
  2. Drawing of a structure with the view from overhead, looking down.
  3. A drawing that depicts an object, unit, or floor plan from straight above.  The drawing used in the definition of PLAN is a plan view. Also see ELEVATION VIEW.

EXAMPLE:

The foreman showed his crew the plan view of the barbecue they were going to build, so they would get a clear idea of the final result.
