NITROGEN CYCLE

The nitrogen cycle is a description of how organic wastes are broken down in an aquatic environment. First, fish wastes naturally decompose into ammonia, which is highly toxic to your fishes. Next, nitrosomonas bacteria process the ammonia into nitrite, which is also toxic. Finally, nitrobacterium bacteria breaks down the nitrite into nitrate, which is much less harmful. A final conversion to nitrogen gas is possible under the right conditions.
