ASTRAGAL

1. The molding that covers a gap between two doors or windows. Astragals are used to ensure two doors or windows are sealed shut. 
2. A molding, attached to one of a pair of swinging double doors, against which the other door strikes.

EXAMPLE:

Astragals are mostly decorative, but can be used to soundproof a room or provide extra security to a door.
