- To make a ground flat or horizontal that had been uneven and/or sloped.
- The process of making the base smooth for paving.
- The process of adding base in order to increase the height.
EXAMPLE:
The ground in our backyard was uneven, so we had it graded.
(to) GRADE: (2)
To change the slope of a ground to achieve a desired effect, such as directing flow of surface water, or making surface more uniform for some specific purpose.
This could mean to make a ground less sloped or more sloped. It involves adding or removing dirt, as well as compacting dirt. In construction grading is used to correctly direct the flow of rainwater so that it doesn’t cause damage to surrounding areas or buildings.
Grading is typically done to move or direct water in a desired direction (usually away from structures.)
EXAMPLE:
Every construction contractor who does work outdoors must know the local laws that govern how to grade at a construction site.
He is working out how the ground should be graded.
