The GM is the Chief Executive of the company, and as an Executive their job is to get others to get things accomplished. To begin with, the GM will be spending much of their time getting others on post; which means that they know what is expected of them and they are producing.
Once someone is on post, the job of the GM now becomes to set targets and to get that individual to hit those targets.
EXAMPLE:
The General Manager of our company will be gone for a week, so the Office Manager will take over their responsibilities during that time.
